Between a rock and a hard place. Iron furniture

Relatively basic of course but furniture would have been an creation of high relevance at that time. Rocks and an unyielding floor at some point became tiresome and unpleasant for slumbering and leisure. The journey to using wrought iron and other metals in iron furniture had begun.

In earliest times rock was employed to make furniture but it may have been more relaxing compared to a raw rock.  There is evidence of the use of stone to build even cupboards and beds.Famous for developing the throne, the Greek furniture designers made great advances. When it comes to materials used, rock was replaced by various woods such as maple, oak and willow and various metals.  Wooden furniture was often embellished with the inlaying of gold, silver and ivory.  In the 17th century beds were even inlayed with pearls ,with iron beds and iron sculptures not uncommon.

Obviously as today the price of raw material would dictate the use of a particular ingredient.  But also of course there are the different costs of different materials of the same type.

During the Roman period hundreds of years BC iron began to be used for furniture.  Wrought iron is mix or alloy made up of a little carbon and grew to become a quite commonly used material for the manufacture of objects which range from furniture to towers.  The phrase wrought suggests that it has been worked on and the qualities of wrought iron allow a craftsman to twist and forge the metal into gorgeous pieces whilst having the strength of  a metal to make sure sturdy furniture which endures lifetimes and also which is pleasing to the eye.

As a testiment to the suprisingly adaptable character of wrought iron, iron sculpture is not uncommon. The completed features feasible on iron furnishings like the footboards and head boards of an iron bed are directly attributable to the malleable character of wrought iron.
